The Oak House, West Bromwich

The building and grounds were a gift of the late Alderman Reuben Farley, the first mayor of the town.  It is one of the most interesting timber built houses in the country.  The original house, built about 1450, was what may be described as a yeoman's homestead; later when it's occupants the Turton family, became more important it was considerably enlarged.  This was in 1620 or there abouts.  These additions can be clearly traced and are conspicuous from being in brick, in many parts built on the face of the old timber walls.

The house has historic as well as architectural interest.  Most of the rooms are panelled in oak and beautifully moulded and carved, all of them seventeenth century, probably at the same time as the extension.
